O.. Forward
To discover the properties of an item, the intrepid adventurer is recommended to hazard the dangers of Danjirland to find the public workshop located in the the Abandoned Inn -- where the savage wraiths dwell.

To access the workshop, one must first find the room with the mirror, located in the attic, and south of the stairs. By going through the mirror, then touching the mirror on the other side, one will be instantly transported to the Abandoned Inn Workshop -- one of the few public workshops in the lands. Here, one may find a clear blue crystal in a dented brass setting.

This crystal has the unique ability of revealing the magical properties of an item, much in the way that a bard may ascertain an item's properties, or the minor elemental spell Elemental Detection (405) can detect an item's spell type and relative charge. It is sufficiently useful that many set a ring for the workshop that they may easily transport back and forth.

By holding the item in ones left hand and nothing in the right and touching the crystal, a display will be set off depending on the attributes of the item. Depending on the kind of item, the crystal indicates different properties.

I. Magical vs. Non-Magical Items
If your item exhibits no properties, then you either have it in the wrong hand, or your item is not magical. Nearly all magical items will show 'tiny golden spark' when the crystal is activated. All this indicates is that the item is magical. Other phenomenon exhibited by the crystal indicate different properties, depending on the item.

II.. Weapons
In addition to demonstrating the tiny golden sparks, magical weapons will also display the following phenomena:
Silver nimbus Blessed or holy
Pure high note Voln or pure-potion blessed
Shrill piercing note Elemental crits (or enchanted by a wizard)
Low mellow tone Defender weapon *
Low resonant tone Critical weighted
Deep bass tone Damage weighted
Shadow Cursed
Red beam 1 to 5 bonus
Orange beam 6 to 10 bonus
Yellow beam 11 to 15 bonus
Green beam 16 to 20 bonus
Blue beam 21 to 25 bonus
Indigo beam 26 to 30 bonus
Violet beam Above 30 bonus
* Defender weapons are those which have a DS bonus in stance offensive.
For instance, the glossy mithril skewers. Those are 5/ 5, therefore when you swing with one in stance offensive you receive a 5 to your AS while at the same time receiving a 5 to your DS. When in stance defensive, you earn a 10 DS bonus, the two bonuses together.

III. Armor
Low mellow tone TD-enhancing
Low resonant tone Crit-padded
Deep bass tone Damage-padded
Shrill piercing note  Enchanted by a wizard
Shadow Cursed
Red beam 1 to 5 bonus
Orange beam 6 to 10 bonus
Yellow beam 11 to 15 bonus
Green beam 16 to 20 bonus
Blue beam 21 to 25 bonus
Indigo beam 26 to 30 bonus
Violet beam Above 30 bonus

IV.. Shields
Shields have an innate 20 bonus which figures into the crystal's response, therefore an ordinary vultite shield will demonstrate a green beam. Therefore, bards are best for determining shield bonuses at higher enchants.
Deep bass note Damage-padded*
Shrill piercing note Enchanted by a wizard
Shadow Cursed
Green beam No bonus above the innate 20
Blue beam 1 to 5 bonus above the innate 20
Indigo beam 6 to 10 bonus above the innate 20
Violet beam Above 10 bonus above the innate 20
Notes: 1. Damage-padded: *There seem to have been vaalin-bound shields sold recently (late 1997) that appear to be damage-padded, among the first instances of such in the Lands.
2.  The innate 20 bonus is no longer included in the beam color. A plain wooden shield now has no color beam (instead of the green beam it exhibited previously). An ordinary vultite shield will now display a green beam instead of violet.

V. Items with Limited Charges
Silver nimbus Contains a clerical spell
Golden scintillating light Imbeddable
Shrill piercing note Above 32 charges remaining

Interestingly enough, the crystal also shows the number of bites left of food or sips left of a drink in much the same manner.
